Dad and I built this in December 2000. He did the mechanics while I did the electronics. It worked nicely for many years, but for some unknown reason, the proprietary motor controller we used kept blowing out. Rather than periodically spending about $40 for replacements, we built our own H-bridge, following this excellent tutorial.

After some tuning, it now seems to be working more reliably than ever.
